Pocket Pal, 22nd Edition

Objective

In 2023, I interned with several other students partnering with the paper production company Sylvamo. Our group refreshed the company's 22nd edition of the print-production handbook, Pocket Pal. Within ten weeks, we developed a new design and color scheme, changed the book dimensions, and reformatted the text for easier readability. At the final presentation, we gave Sylvamo representatives a functional physical prototype of the proposed 22nd edition.

Research and Analysis

  • After reading through the 21st edition and examining the previous versions, the group noted specific pain points that were the most important to address:

    • The binding made it difficult to read the full page

    • The text was small and very condensed

    • Difficult to navigate and find a specific topic

    • There was a lack of design harmony between the visual elements

  • Researched and analyzed book competitors to see where the Pocket Pal could stand out in the market

Design Ideation

  • We developed moodboards, color palettes, and proposed multiple aesthetic directions before settling on Looking Through 'A' Window

  • Proposed the idea of a wider format with spiral-binding, allowing the book to lie flat and be easier to quickly reference
